When Murshida Duce attended Meher Baba’s “East-West Gathering” in 1962, she was impressed by the devotional songs his Indian devotees sang to express their complete and unwavering love for him. Called “artis” these songs were performed with a deep sense of sincerity and adoration.

Murshida obtained a translation of one of these artis and asked her student Henry S. Mindlin

to fashion it into a song that her students and other American devotees could sing. Meher Baba reviewed the lyrics and, with a few edits, approved it as the first American arti.

Subsequently, Meher Baba’s other prayers were given expression through song.

Chorus of Sufism Reoriented Meher Babas Name

In the Charter Meher Baba prepared for Sufism Reoriented, he specified a set of “obligations”. Among those was:

To necessarily repeat verbally daily one name of God for half an hour at any time of the day or night; this is to be done consecutively if possible, but may be accomplished in smaller portions if necessary.

To aid his students fulfill this request, Murshid James MacKie asked the Chorus of Sufism Reoriented to set Meher Baba’s name to original music. For nearly fifty years, these rounds have been chanted by members of Sufism Reoriented, individually and in devotional gatherings.

They are offered here for download.
